A Mama’s Summer Reading List

I am what you call a voracious reader. I devour books like I have been stranded on a deserted island with nothing to eat but coconuts. As a mom of a very active toddler, I do not have many opportunities to read books of my choosing throughout the day. At night, I like to read to put myself to sleep. The voices of the fictional characters work together to drown out my inner monologue which is really just my never ending “To Do” list coupled with my mental inventory of worries.

I love to read and I love to learn, but when I enter into summer vacation mode, I just want to be entertained. I want to laugh out loud or get goosebumps or fall in love right along with the characters. Your summer reading list is meant to be full of books that you can read poolside or at the beach while sipping on an icy, tropical cocktail. Here are some of my favorites:

For the Parent of Fur Babies: If your best friend/baby happens to be furry, this is the book for you. The story is narrated by Wrigley, a dog, who lives at an assisted living facility. Although Wrigley will most certainly tug on your heart strings, you will not reach the end of the book and have an ugly cry.

For the Toddler Mom: If you have a toddler and have ever agonized about which preschool he/she will attend before your little one has even taken their first steps, this is the book for you. The moms in this series are desperate to become members of the most exclusive playgroup in town because admission means their child’s future is secure.

For the Girlfriend: If you have ever had a frenemy, this is the book for you. Cousins and best frenemies, Arden and Rory, go away to college and end up becoming critically injured in a fire. As their parents try to piece together what happened, they discover that the girls were keeping quite a few secrets.

For the Good Wife: Casey is the perfect wife and has everything going for her when she ends up in a coma after a car accident. As she lies in her hospital bed, she can hear everything her “loved” ones say and she realizes her life was not so idyllic after all.

For the Sister: The Campbell sisters go on the run one summer to escape a bad home life and end up going right through the gates of hell. Years later, just when they think they have escaped, they get pulled right back in to the horror they thought they had left behind.

For the Hopeless Romantic: If you are nostalgic for the summer of your first love, this is the book for you. Rachel and Andy meet with they are children and fall in love again and again throughout their lives. It’s sweet, romantic, and perfect for the beach.

For the Working Mom: If you have ever struggled to maintain the work/home life balance, this book is for you. When her husband leaves his job, Alice must find a full time job to help support her family. She lands an exciting new job, but her life at home begins to crumble. Alice learns that trying to have it all may come at a price.

For the Absent-Minded Mom: If you ever struggle to keep track of things or just happen like a good surprise, this book is for you. The narrator flat out tells the reader that the characters are a bunch of liars, so it is in your best interest to believe her. The lies surround events that took place over one particular summer, so if you have summer memories that are best left forgotten, you will love this story.

For the Crunchy Mom: If you like hiking, camping, and all things natural, this book is for you. This is the real-life story of Cheryl Strayed and how she hiked the Pacific Coast Trail by herself. It inspires you to tackle your greatest challenges or at the very least, go on a nature walk with your kids.

For the Mama Bear: If you would do anything and I mean anything to protect your child, this is the book for you. Jack’s whole life is his Ma and a room in which he has been trapped for the first seven years of his life. It’s suspenseful and gut wrenching and makes you want to hug your little one even tighter.
