August Instagram Challenge and How I Made $89

Instagram Challenge and How I Made $89 in a Slow Month

The summer months are slow on the blog and yet I made $89 without breaking a sweat. Well, actually I was sweating because we are triple digit temperatures where I live, but that is an entirely different story. Traffic is down and yet this is the most income I have generated on the blog! Pretty exciting, right?

Blog Goals

My husband always says that I work awfully hard on this blog to not generate any income. This is true. However, my goal has not been to monetiize. My goal has been to build a following and grow my traffic. These are very different goals. A lot of bloggers jump right into trying to monetize and it really works…for a few. If you are planning on making six figures as a blogger right off the bat…you are in for major disappointment.

*The following contains affiliate links. For more information, please check out my disclosures page.

So, as I said, I did not intentionally set out to make a little extra dough this month, but I am not complaining! I was warned that the summer months are slow on a blog. It seems that everyone it out enjoying the sunshine rather than face down reading your latest blog post. I get it. That is what I am doing, too! So, if page views are down, it’s nice if your cash flow is up.

Find Your Tribe Online $36.15

I am an affiliate for Find Your Tribe Online because it is what totally changed my blogging in life. When I started this blog (almost exactly two years ago), I wrote a few posts and then took a year hiatus. I did not promote a single one of those early posts. A friend of mine had to explain hashtags to me…in detail. I was clueless.

When I came back to my blog a year later, I did so because I wanted to keep writing. But I had a journal. I wanted people to actually read my writing! I came across Jen Synder’s pins on Pinterest. Rather than offer some “get rich quick” scheme, she proposed that you can drive traffic to your blog by growing your tribe. I loved everything about this idea.

By purchasing FYTO, I gained access to all of these wonderful Facebook groups and Pinterest groups. Suddenly, I had all these people to ask questions and collaborate with. I shared all of their stuff (and learned so much in the process). They shared my stuff and what do you know? I was getting real traffic to my blog! Now Jen has an amazing course to walk you through it all and she even offers mentoring! If you have not checked out FYTO online yet, do it!

Amazon Affiliates $25.10

I am an affiliate for Amazon because I am probably visiting Amazon myself several times per day. As a work-at-home mom, I really appreciate being able to order so much of what I need in a click of a button. Plus, Amazon has everything.

Usually I made a few dollars every month through Amazon Affiliates. When I say in my disclosures that it is possible to make a small commission by using my link. I mean that the commission is small. However, I have personally bought all of the items I recommend on Amazon, so that is why I use them over other affiliate networks.

There are a couple of features that Amazon has that I do not regularly talk about, but really help me save money. If you have not already tried these features on Amazon, you totally need to and you can thank me later!

Amazon Prime

It costs me $99 per year to be a member of Amazon Prime. However, did you know that you can add family members to your Prime Membership? This means you can share all of the benefits of Prime like free two-day shipping, access to Amazon Prime movies/television/music, and free photo storage. Everyone gets to keep their own Prime Accounts, but you can split the cost of membership while sharing all of the rewards.

Amazon Baby Registry

I created my baby registry on Amazon because I was on bed rest for the duration of my pregnancy. However, in researching baby product prices (as I had the time to do such things), I learned that Amazon also has the best prices on baby products! This also means that friends and family members do not have to experience the overwhelm of actually visiting a baby store. They can just purchase the items of their choice and send it directly to your doorstep! Yes, please!

Teachers Pay Teachers $7.98

As you may know, I am a teacher. I have created all kinds of items for use in my classroom over the years. All of us teachers are always creating things for our students because we are the ones that know exactly what they need. We also love to share said items with one another because we are a tribe. Enter Teachers Pay Teachers.

Here we can buy and sell all of those fantastic products that help us in the classroom. If you are a teacher, you need to check it out, if you have not already! If you are a mom or especially a home school mom, head over there and check out the incredible resources you can use at home with your little ones!

Share a Sale $7.00 Plus Free Tailwind Credits

Share a Sale is an affiliate marketing network. If you are a blogger, you can join Share a Sale and receive access to hundreds of merchants. You can do a product review, run ads, or recommend services. All you have to do is sign up, then search for the merchants/brands that you would like to work with!

You do have to apply to become an affiliate with each merchant. There are certain companies that will reject your application based upon the state in which you live. So, don’t be offended! The applications only take a few minutes to complete and you are usually approved within 24-48 hours.

Once approved, you can grab all of your links and banners from the Share a Sale site. The commission varies per merchant. I have been able to find a ton of companies that I would be recommending anyway, so why not make a little extra dough?

Ebates $12.77

I have absolutely no idea why I was not using Ebates sooner. You just go through their site to shop online at all of your favorite stores and earn cash back for your purchases. No gimmicks. It’s that easy.

There are certain stores that offer more cash back than others, but from time-to-time there will be bonus weekends where you can earn even more cash back. I just ordered a few Back-to-School outfits for my daugther (who is about to go to preschool for the first time!) and earned 10% cash back at Gap.

You can earn cash back at stores, restaurants, and hotels. I have only used the online component, but they do offer cash back on your purchases at physical stores, as well. I highly suggest doing your school shopping through Ebates and then you will get your cash back pay out close to Christmas for that last-minute holiday shopping!

More Ways to Earn in August

Like I said, money is not my first priority with this blog (right now), but I am not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. My daughter is starting preschool this fall and I could definitely use a little extra income to help cover the cost of her tuition. Does this sound familiar? We can all use a little extra income, right?

Have you heard of Ultimate Bundles? Ultimate Bundles is pretty much like it sounds. It is a bundle of resources that you can offer your readers at a steeply discounted price. The bundles are a collection of resources on a topic (ebooks, course, guides). Basically, everything you could ever need for 90-95% off. It you become an affiliate for Ultimate Bundles, you can earn a 40% commission for every bundle sold!

Why am I telling you this? Well, the next Ultimate Bundle is the Parenting Super Bundle. The deal will run from August 9th through August 14th. As an affiliate, I was already able to purchase my bundle and it is ahhhh-mazing. There is everything from crafts, chore charts, planners, behavior strategies/resources, educational games and activities, home schooling resouces, and recipes. Plus, plenty of reading on the topics of parenthood, family, and faith.

You can use this link to become an affiliate before the Parenting Super Bundle goes on sale or you check out the bundle when it goes on sale and save some serious cash on some wonderful parenting resources.

July Blog Traffic Report

As I mentioned, July was pretty slow. Everyone is out having fun and enjoying the sunshine! I also started posting only once per week instead of twice. However, this meant a decrease in traffic this month. My goal for August is to post only per week, but to offer valuable content upgrades for my readers in each post. It will take a bit longer to write, but I hope to offer some bang for the buck.

Also, most bloggers recommend spending 20% of your time writing and 80% of your time promoting. This is my plan for August!

August Instagram Challenge

Blog Traffic Goals

Next month, I plan on only posting once per week (with the exception of the first week). August is my busiest month as a teacher mom, so I am going to keep my goals reasonable and attainable this month!

  • Blog Page Views: 5,480
  • Twitter Followers: 8,250
  • Pinterest Followers: 4,500
  • Facebook Page Likes: 1,050
  • Instagram Followers: 1,700

Blog Progress Report

The teacher in me can’t help but to give my blog a monthly progress report. If I were to give the blog a grade this month, it would probably be a “C”. I posted some great content, but I did not achieve all of my goals. However, I do not really want to give the blog a letter grade. As we teachers know, letter grades do not give you the entire picture of the student…or in this case, blog.

I created a blog progress report instead that will help me track data. It is important to see how each post is performing. Plus, I want to know where my traffic is really coming from. Are certain posts performing better on different social media platforms? Also, what kind of interaction is each post receiving?

  1. I wouldn’t worry too much about pageviews being down. The summer is notoriously slow.

I also love using Shareasale! They have some great programs available but I wish that searching for new merchants was a little nicer (the user interface I mean). It took me quite a while to get used to their layout. There are some beautiful programs on there that would be suitable for your blog (you may already be a part of them though). The Land Of Nod comes to mind specifically 🙂

    1. Yes! That is so true! I really was not aware of all of the programs for so long because their user interface is so…technical. I am not a part of Land of Nod! I am going to go apply! Thank you so much for your comments and advice! It is very much appreciated.

    1. These are pretty basic, I know that there is a lot out there. Many bloggers make money through running ads, as well. I know there are also some great courses on affiliate marketing. All on my “to do” list!

  2. I’m still fairly new at all of this, and trying to figure out all of the different social media sites is making my brain hurt. Thank you for the encouragement to keep going–even when I’m pretty sure the only people reading my blog are my husband and my dog!

    1. Some days I’m pretty sure my only readers are my hubby and my Aunt, but if you do it because you love it and feel like you offer something to your readers, it is totally worth it! I wish you all the best in your new blog. I love your blog’s name!

  3. I keep saying that I want to make goals, and then all of a sudden it’s the end of the month again-UGH! I just added Amazon to my site, (and really I have no great expectations). So that’s something…right? I love the Instagram challenge. Instagram is where I feel most comfortable, so a challenge like this will be really fun. Thanks for sharing all these ways you make money, I think it’s time for me to take some action.

    1. It took me a while to start setting goals, but it has really helped me to stay focused. But it is still hard to know what is truly realistic! I might ask you for Instagram tips because I am really still starting to learn that platform! I wish you lots of success with Amazon!

    1. I know! I very happy for others that do so well, but I try to “keep it real” for myself and set goals that actually attainable. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and comment!

  4. What a great post, thank you so much for sharing!
I didn’t know that there are so many different ways of making money from a blog. It’s not like I only focus on it but after putting so much effort in it, a little bit of pocket money would be great, right? 😉 I always thought there’s only amazon affiliate but I should have a look at the others, too!

  5. I’m taking the FYTO course right now and I love it. I’ve already started receiving more engagement and I just started the FB strategies yesterday.
