Before becoming a parent, I did not set out to be what is coined as a “crunchy mom”. I just kind of fell into “crunchy” habits. No, I do not mean spending all day crunching on Goldfish crackers…although I do that, too. I mean the gravitation towards things that are all-natural, wholesome, and deliciously nutritious.
It started with pregnancy. Becoming pregnant, for me, was a long time coming. So, when I finally became pregnant, I researched absolutely everything I put into my body. I took “eating for two” to a brand new level. By the way, I do apologize to my hubby, friends, family, and doctors for being so neurotic!
However, my neuroses continued full-force after giving birth. Sure, I had delivered a healthy baby. But, now she was out in the world, where my womb could not protect her! I still had to consider everything that was going into my body because I was nursing. Plus, she had that beautifully delicate baby skin to protect.
So, that’s right I became the “crunchy mom”. The one who embraces extended breastfeeding, makes her own baby food, and creates all of her own DIY homemade, all-natural products. And you know what? My daughter is healthy and happy. Plus, I feel better (and look better!) Ready to get crunchy with me?
How to Make Homemade, All-Natural Products for Moms and Kids
Full disclosure, I got into essential oils for all of the reasons listed above and I chose Young Living because of their Seed to Seal® process. Every step from planting to bottling is detailed and controlled, from the seed on their own farms to the bottling of the oils. I personally use Young Living products and highly recommend them. However, you can rock any of these DIY recipes with your favorite brand of oils and other all-natural ingredients.

Homemade, All-Natural Products for Bath Time
Is there anything more precious than bath time? Bath time is one of my favorite times of day. No distractions, just bubbles and sweet smells with me and my little. When I was little, my mom swore by the name brand baby products. Did you know that these actually contained formaldehyde even as recently as 2014? Scary, right? It is this knowledge that prompted me to begin making my own products!
DIY Homemade All-Natural Shampoo
- 1 and ½ cups unscented liquid castile soap, such as Dr. Bronners
- 2 T fractionated coconut oil
- 10 drops Lavender or Gentle Baby
- Optional: 3-5 Drops of Rosemary (Great for the hair!)
Stir together liquid castile soap and fractionated coconut oil. Add in essential oil of your choice and mix well. Store in a soap pump dispenser for easy use at bath time.
ADDED BONUS: Lavender and Gentle Baby are great for calming and relaxing, so it you do bath time at night, it will help calm your little one into a peaceful night’s slumber.
Detox Bath for Mamas
- ¼ cup Sea Salt or Himalayan Sea Salt
- ½ – 1 cup Epsom salts
- ¼ cup Baking Soda
- 1/3 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 6-10 drops of the essential oils of your choice (Lavender, Stress Away, and Copaiba are relaxing options!)
- 1-2 T Coconut Oil
In a quart size glass jar, mix together Salt, Epsom salts, and Baking Soda. Add your 6-10 drops of essential oil, screw on the lid and shake well. Allow the essential oils to disperse into the Epsom salts for 5-10 minutes. Then, fill a bath with very warm water. Next, add the Apple Cider Vinegar and Coconut Oil directly to it. Dissolve the bath salt mixture into the bath water. Soak for 20-30 minutes to get the full effect.
Epsom salts help raise your magnesium levels and draw out toxins from your body. The baking soda is a naturally alkaline substance that helps to neutralize the water and make it ready for a great soak. Just for kicks, google “Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits”. Seriously, do it. The coconut oil is a very effective moisturizer and will leave your skin feeling amazingly smooth after the bath. And finally, the essential oils will help support relaxation, healthy skin, and amazing sleep.
This bath will make you feel refreshed, invigorated, and relaxed all at the same time. Go on, Mama. Treat yourself!
Detox Bath for Kids
Kids can also benefit from a detox bath! This bath recipe is great if your little one is feeling under the weather or needs a little calm down time after a busy day. But I especially like it to moisturize my little one’s delicate skin in the winter months.
- 1/4 cup Baking Soda
- 1/2 cup Epsom Salts
- 1 tbs Coconut Oil
- 2 drops Lavender
- 2 drops Cedarwood
Add the baking soda and Coconut Oil while your are filling the tub. Then, use a glass jar to mix your Epsom Salts and essential oils. Add your salts and oil to the bath right before your little one gets in. I always like lavender for my little in the bath because it is such a versatile oil. Cedarwood is wonderful for relaxing, but it is also great for the skin! You could substitute Cedarwood for Gentle Baby for extra calming, Orange for immune support, or Eucalyptus for respiratory support.
Homemade, All-Natural Products for Skin
Is there anything silkier than baby skin? It is so beautiful and yet also so fragile! My daughter suffered some serious dry skin as a baby due to our dry climate and my intake of dairy while nursing. Just a head’s up, if your baby is having tummy troubles or dry skin and you are nursing, try eliminating dairy. It takes a while to dairy detox (and it is awful if you LOVE cheese, as I do), but it can make a huge difference.
To keep your baby’s skin baby soft and keep Mama looking like you still have that “pregnancy glow”, try these recipes!
DIY Diaper Cream
- 1/4 cup Coconut Oil
- 10 drops Lavender
- 10 drops Frankincense
- 10 drops Gentle Baby
*Lavender, Frankincense, and Gentle Baby are all fantastic for the skin for kids (or moms!) of any age!
First, whip coconut oil with a fork until it is soft and creamy. Next, add your essential oils, whipping well after each one. Apply to baby bum at every diaper change, or at the first sign of redness.
Coconut oil is the perfect carrier oil for diaper cream because of its natural yuck-fighting properties, but it does begin to melt at about 75-80 degrees. If you live in a warm climate (like me), try stirring 1-2 tsp of melted beeswax into your coconut oil. This will give your cream a higher level of moisture protection and help it to remain solid at warmer temperatures.
Homemade, All-Natural Moisturizing Lotion
This moisturizer is perfect for moms and babes! It also smells fantastic!
- 5 oz. Shea Butter
- 3 oz. Avocado Oil or Jojoba Oil
- 3 oz. Coconut Oil
- 20 drops Lavender
- 15 drops Tea Tree
- Optional: 5 Drops Frankincense, Gentle Baby, or Stress Away
In a double boiler (or a makeshift one using a pot and bowl) melt shea butter just until it is soft. Then, pour into the bowl of a mixer and add avocado oil, coconut oil, and essential oils. Next, whip together until smooth and creamy. Store in an airtight glass container.
DIY Dry, Red, Itchy Skin Ointment
- 1-2 drops of Lavender
- 1-2 drops of Melrose
- 1/2 tsp of a carrier oil (coconut oil is perfect for this!)
Combine and apply over affected area. For tender tushies, apply at every diaper change and let your little one’s bum air out for a few minutes. Otherwise, I apply right after bathing or as needed throughout the day. I like slathering this recipe on my feet and then covering my feet in thick socks for a little extra love in the winter.
DIY Face Serum for Mamas
My skin type is dry, dry, dry. Like the Sahara. Winter has my skin especially parched and this face serum has been by saving grace!
- 1-2 drops Lavender
- 1-2 drops Frankincense
- Optional: 1 drop Bergamot for a healthy glow
- Optional: 1 drop Tea Tree for any blemishes
- 1 tablespoon Jojoba Oil
I usually just mix all of the above in my hands and then slather on my face nightly. Or, you can double or triple the batch and store in an air-tight glass container. Jojaba is a wonderful carrier oil to use on the skin because the formulation actually mimicks the oils produced by our skin glands!
Homemade, All-Natural Products for Bed Time
As I have mentioned about a gazillion time, sleep is rather elusive for me. Plus, I have a toddler that has more gusto than the Energizer Bunny! These products are designed to help everyone catch some much needed zzz’s.
DIY Sleepy Cream
- 3-4 T virgin coconut oil
- 8 drops Lavender essential oil
- 6 drops Peace & Calming essential oil
- 2 drops Cedarwood
In a small glass container with a lid (like a small Ball canning jar) whip the coconut oil with a fork. Next, add each essential oil, whipping well after each addition. Rub this on your little one’s feet at bed time and give them a nice, soothing foot massage.
*I mention coconut oil quite a bit! For virgin coconut oil, I love the one carried by Trader Joe’s. For fractionated coconut oil, you can try one like the one below. Fractionated oil means that a “fraction” of the oil is used and some of the fatty acids are removed. I prefer using the fractionated oil in rollers for it’s smooth consistency and the “regular” version in creams and lotions.
DIY Sleepy Time Roller
- 10 drops Lavender
- 10 drops Gentle Baby
- 5 drops Peace and Calming
- 3 drops Stress Away
- 2 drops Cedarwood
- Top a 10mL roller with Coconut Oil
Add all of your oils to a 10mL roller and top with coconut oil. Then, roll on feet, wrists, and the back of the neck for a fabulous night’s sleep. This works great on Mamas, too!
Nighty Night Spray
- 3 oz. distilled water
- 1 oz. witch hazel
- 3 drops Lavender
- 3 drops Gentle Baby
Mix all of your ingredients together in a 4oz glass spray bottle. Then, shake well. Just before bedtime, spray one or two sprays on pillows, blankets, or crib sheets. This makes your entire bedroom smell a sleep haven!
- 3 oz. water
- 3 drops Lavender
- 10 drops Valor
Kiddo can’t sleep because of those pesky monsters under the bed? Mix all of these ingredients in 4 oz. glass spray bottle. Lavender is an excellent oil for calming and Valor inspires bravery! Shake well before each use. Then, spray under the bed or in the closet…or wherever monsters need banishing. For more Monster Spray recipes, click here!
